WSHS Orchestra “Clef Notes” #7 – February 21, 2024
Abbreviated updates for WSHS Orchestra students and parents Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the All-West TN Regional Honors Orchestra Clinic and Concerts on February 8-9. The students were great, and the concerts were fantastic! Our own Jack Feng will be performing the Brahms Double Concerto the Memphis Youth Symphony on Sunday, March 3. Information can be found here: https://www.myspmusic.org/concerts-events Perform 1. The Spartan Strings Festival (WSMS and WSHS) will be Thursday, February 29 (leap day!). Call time is 6:00, and the concert starts at 6:30. Fair warning- this is the longest concert of the year! 2. The Concert Festival field trip will be in the morning of March 7. Watch for permission slips very soon. 3. The All-State Orchestras will be at the Opryland Convention Center on April 10-13. Information went home on goldenrod and/or pink paper this week. The $80 registration fee should be sent in ASAP. 4. Our Senior Recognition and Awards Concert is Monday, April 29. Classwork and Grades 1. There will be three Practice Plans for the third quarter. Due dates: Plan 3.1 – January 22; Plan 3.2 – February 12; Plan 3.3 – March 6. 2. The third quarter Project is due February 23. 3. We are studying the first movement of Antonin Dvorak’s Romantische Stücke in both classes. Flip performance assessments are labeled as Dvorak 1, Dvorak 2, etc. Dvorak 1 was due Jan. 23, and can still be submitted for a late grade. Dvorak 2 was due Feb. 5. A complete performance of the piece was due Feb. 19, but technical issues with Flip.com have pushed the due date to Feb. 21. Classroom Visitors A String Trio will be visiting the classes on Friday, Feb. 23. The musicians are on the faculties of the U. of Louisville and UT-El Paso. Christina Lai, Director of Operations and Programming for the PRIZM Ensemble, will be visiting the classes on Monday, March 4 to talk about the two events listed in the Go Play! below. Go Play! The University of Mississippi is having a Music Major Advantage Day on Friday, March 1. Interested students will get tours of the campus, attend classes, and can schedule a scholarship audition, too. Date: April 20, 2024 Early Bird Registration: March 1, 2024 Final Registration: March 29, 2024 Eligibility: Each entering chamber ensemble should consist of 2 – 6 performers.
