Welcome to the White Station High School Orchestras! If you have not done so, please complete the 2021-22 Orchestra Enrollment Intent Form, which can be accessed here:
There are two Honors Orchestras at WSHS. The Intermediate Orchestra (seventh period) does not require an audition. Enrollment in the Advanced Orchestra (sixth period) requires director approval, by audition. If you are interested in auditioning, please read on! Additionally, several current students in the Advanced Orchestra have offered to help you to prepare for the audition. If you would like some coaching from a “Been there, done that” high school student, please email me soon, and I will connect you with one of them. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Audition Instructions
Live, individual auditions will be conducted through TEAMS, and may be recorded. Dr. Palmer will work with middle school teachers to schedule the auditions - if possible - during the student's orchestra class. If necessary, auditions may be scheduled after school. I expect auditions to take place during the second week of May. The audition will consist of two required scales and two orchestral excerpts. There will not be sight-reading on this audition.
1. Scales: Perform your scales in at least two octaves, and with a minimum tempo of 100 beats per minute.
Violin: Scale 1: A Major Scale 2: E-flat Major
Viola: Scale 1: D Major Scale 2: B-flat Major
Cello: Scale 1: D Major Scale 2: B-flat Major
Bass: Scale 1: F Major Scale 2: A Major
2. Orchestral excerpts: Perform both marked excerpts (PDFs provided below) from Beethoven's First Symphony and Elgar's Enigma Variations. YouTube links are provided for you to understand the context of your excerpts. The tempi are NOT mandatory.
Play well!

Third Quarter Grade Improvement Assignment
Choose ONE of the four options below. Please be thorough and complete. Make sure to follow the writing guidelines (see V. on page 2).
I. Concert Report
Watch and review this concert by the New York Philharmonic.
Your written critique will be at least one complete page. Your critique should include: The name of the group, conductor, soloists, etc. (You do not need to name all of the orchestra musicians, of course). Where and when was the concert; The name and description of all of the selections performed; The purpose of the event; The impact on the audience. Other pertinent information.
Did you enjoy the concert? Will you go hear them in person, or find more of their online material? Were you suprised by anything you saw or heard? Anything else you would like to add?
Demonstrate to the reader that you gave the performance your undivided attention.
II. Summary of Music Journal Articles
Summarize at least three, and up to five, Music Journal Articles. To earn all five extra points, make sure you do five summaries. These articles may be found on the internet. You can also go to our website and find links. http://whitestationorchestra.weebly.com/journals-and-publications.html
Journal articles can be about musicians, instruments, performances, working conditions, etc. They should NOT be reviews of concerts, recordings, the latest amplifier, etc. The summaries will demonstrate your comprehension of the topic, not simple regurgitation. They will be written in your own words. Each summary will be at least one-half page in length. Your report will include a summary paragraph of all you have learned.
III. Comparison of Recordings
Listen to at least three, and up to five, different and distinct recordings of one selection from any of our concerts this year. Compare and contrast the recordings to each other. To earn all five extra points, make sure you use five different recordings. The summaries will demonstrate your comprehension of the topic, not simple regurgitation. They will be written in your own words. The comparison will be at least two complete pages, and include a summary paragraph. It will also distinctly identify the recordings.
IV. Audition Performance
Perform the Advanced Orchestra Audition. Record a live performance of the audition (scales, solo, and excerpt) in one take (with no editing). Upload the recording to Youtube as “unlisted” and send me the link. All of the audition information can be found at http://whitestationorchestra.weebly.com/auditions.html
Your score will be based on a five point scale: 1 point for each scale, 1 point for your solo, 1 point for the excerpt, and one point for uploading the unedited video.
V. Writing Requirements (for Activities I, II, and III)
A. For the body of your text, use 12 point font (this size), double spaced, and be concise. Your titles, name, headers, etc. should not be double spaced.
If you cannot type the assignment, please make sure your handwriting is clear, clean, and legible.
B. Spelling counts. Grammar counts. Clarity counts.
C. Content.
1. While a summary of this length cannot be exhaustively comprehensive, it should demonstrate knowledge of the composer/topic.
2. The information will be in your own writing (not cut and paste).
3. If you are doing research, you should find some information that is new to you, i.e. “I didn’t know that Mozart’s father was also a composer,” or, “The plural of concerto is concerti!” Make sure you tell the reader what YOU learned in your research.
4. Demonstrate your comprehension of the material. Do not simply compile a group of facts. Connect the dots.
5. Closing Paragraph. Summarize your topic.
D. Documentation
1. You must cite your sources. I should be able to locate your source material from your documentation.
a) Program Notes: at least two sources
b) Concert Report: the url or internet link so I can watch it, too.
c) Music Journals: at least three articles, and up to five.
2. If you use a direct quote from a source (copied it word for word), please use “quotation marks” and make a direct citation (source & page number) at that time. Give the full source information at the end of each report.
E. Submission
1. All work must be turned in by 11:59 p.m. on May 11. I recommend turning it in earlier than that to ensure that you have submitted it properly.
2. Submit written work (I, II, or III) by email to [email protected]. In the subject line, please write: Grade Improvement for your first and last names
3. Submit the audition recording by uploading it to Youtube as an “unlisted” video. Share the link with me by sending an email to [email protected]. I will let you know when you can remove the video from Youtube.
F. Questions? Please ask. Email is the best way to get a clear answer. You can also message me through Remind.
