Welcome to the first of the 2022-23 WSHS Orchestra “Clef Notes.” These Notes will contain brief summaries of our classroom announcements and other information concerning the WSHS Orchestras. Please take a moment to read through the Notes. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. *Fair warning- this is the longest Clef Notes of the year!*
I’d like to welcome Wesley Heinecke as our Resident Teacher Candidate from the University of Memphis this year. He will be with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the fall semester, and full-time in the spring semester. He is from the greater Nashville area, and his primary instrument is the violin. We look forward to working with Mr. Heinecke in masterclasses, in sectionals, and from the podium. The Orchestra Activity Expense is $50.00 for this year. This covers the All-West Audition and Concert Festival (see the syllabus for details). You can send cash or check (made to White Station High School) starting next week. Communicate 1. Page with links to Auditions, Festivals, and Competitions. - A Resources page that includes practicing help, “how to” videos, links to external organizations, our REMIND pages, and much more. - If you are new to the WSHS Orchestras, please take a few minutes to look around the site. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please let me know! 2. The 2022-23 Honors Orchestra Syllabus is on the homepage of the website and posted in TEAMS. Please read through the syllabus for classroom expectations, concert uniform requirements, and resources. 3. Our Remind codes are: 6th period: @wshsorc6 7th period: @wshsorc7, and, FOR ALL PARENTS: @wsorchpar. Text your code to 81010 or 901-881-9447. You may also register at “rmd.at/classcode.” Most You can send text messages to me through REMIND. Parents are welcome to sign up for their child’s class code, too. 4. We will continue to use TEAMS this year, especially the Files and Assignments tabs. Some assignments will continue to be digitally submitted in TEAMS, as will my feedback regarding the work. 5. My email is [email protected] . It is the best way to contact me for questions, suggestions, concerns, and clarifications. Classwork and Grades 1. The first Practice Plan (covering three weeks) began August 15, and will be due September 6. It will be submitted electronically in TEAMS. Students will be setting goals, measuring their progress, and seeking feedback. The Parent’s verification signature has been removed from the form. Students’ integrity will be reflected in their plans. 2. Materials and supply checks will begin this week. 3. Flipgrid.com is now Flip.com. Flip is an online video submission platform that will be used for individual playing assessments. Almost all Orchestra students have successfully joined our group! https://flip.com/6af960bf You can view all assessments, which are called “Topics.” The first submission was due Wednesday, August 17. Flip #2 will be due September 1. 4. We will use Habits of a Successful String Musician as our required method book. Students need their own copy at home, and will be required to bring it into the classroom at various times during the year. Mark Your Calendars 1. Our first quarter concert is scheduled for Monday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. 2. The U. of Memphis will host its annual high school honors orchestra clinic (with a new String Quartet component) October 26-29. 3. The All-West TN Regional Honors Orchestra audition information has been posted at WTSBOA.org. The audition is scheduled for Saturday, November 19.
