Abbreviated updates for WSHS Orchestra students and parents
Congratulations to the students from the Advanced Orchestra who performed “transition music” during the WSHS Open House September 1. It was great to have live “gig” music at WSHS again! The Orchestra Activity Expense is $50.00 for this year. This covers the All-West Audition and Concert Festival (see the syllabus for details). You can send cash or check (made to White Station High School) now. Nominations for the 2022 University of Memphis Honors String Quartet and Orchestra Festival (October 26-29) are now open. For me to nominate your WSHS student, I need to hear from you by Monday, September 26. Information about the Festival can be found here: https://www.memphis.edu/stringsfestival/ The 2022-23 Honors Orchestra Syllabus is on the homepage of the website and posted in TEAMS. Please read through the syllabus for classroom expectations, concert uniform requirements, and resources. The Band and Orchestra trip to Dallas, Texas is ON for February 20-22, 2023. Concerts, College Tours, Masterclasses, Six Flags, and more! Information and Registration can be found here: https://whitestationband.org/2020-band-and-orchestra-trip/ There is a free Audition Preparation workshop on Saturday, October 1 at Kate Bond MS for all MSCS Orchestra students. A sign-up form was distributed during class this week. I’ve attached a copy. Classwork and Grades 1. The first Practice Plan (covering three weeks) was due September 6. They are submitted electronically in TEAMS. Students will be setting goals, measuring their progress, and seeking feedback. Plan 1.2 is due on September 20. 2. Materials & supply checks have begun. Rosin, shoulder rests, rock stops, rags, etc. Everything, everyday! 3. Flip #2 (Your best scale with All-West audition parameters) was due September 1, and Flip 3 (Demonstration of a goal from Practice Plan 1.2) is due September 27. 4. The Project/Portfolio/Presentation Assignment is due Friday, September 23. 5. We will use Habits of a Successful String Musician as our required method book. Students need their own copy at home, and will be required to bring it into the classroom starting next week (September 19) Classroom Visitors Dr. Kimberly Patterson, Cello Professor, and Dr. Marcin Arendt, Violin Professor (both from the University of Memphis) visited with both classes on September 13 and gave a brief masterclass on the All-West Audition excerpts. Mr. Wesley Heinecke (Student Teacher from the University of Memphis) will be increasing his instructional activities soon to include sectionals and masterclasses. Mark Your Calendars Our first quarter concert is scheduled for Monday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The All-West TN Regional Honors Orchestra audition is Saturday, November 19.
